Nirbhay Sharma sworn in as new Governor of Mizoram

Lt General (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma on May 26, 2015 was sworn-in as the Governor of Mizoram at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Aizawl.

The oath of office to Sharma was administered by Justice T Vaiphei, judge of the Gauhati High Court.

General Sharma is the eighth Governor of Arunachal Pradesh after Vakkom Purushothaman who resigned on July 12 last year in protest against being transferred to Nagaland.

It should be noted that Sharma was appointed as Mizoram Governor on May 12 by President Pranab Mukherjee, replacing West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi who has taken  additional charge of Mizoram.

Some facts you should know about Nirbhay Shrama

  • Nirbhay Sharma was born in Lucknow in 1946, he joined National Defence Academy after graduating and was commissioned in the Indian Army in 1966.
  • Sharma holds an M.Sc and an M.Phil in Defence Studies from Madras University, and is widely recognised as a strategic thinker and defence analyst.
  • He is considered as  one of the most distinguished and decorated Field Commanders of the Indian Army.
  • Maximum of his assignments have dealt with Jammu & Kashmir and the North Eastern states; his last assignment being a Corps Commander and Security Advisor to the Government of J&K.
  • As a young Captain, he fought in the 1971 War and was part of the Airborne Assault Group, the first Indian Army Unit to enter Dacca.
  • Sharma as a Director General (Perspective Planning) in the Army HQ, has worked on the Restructuring of the Army HQ and assisted in drafting ‘Army Vision 2020’.
  • He is a Distinguished Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, his articles and perspective have been published in many journals and newspapers and he has also participated in numerous seminars and discussions with with leading global think tanks within the country and abroad.
